I've read a bit over break, and it's been refreshing. I've worked with books over break: also refreshing. I've played the trivial pursuit book lover's edition: hard but refreshing. Since the Know-it-all I've read "God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian" by Vonnegut. It was very short; I read it in about half an hour before going to church w/ my parents. It put me in kind of a weird state of mind, seeing as it was all about these "near-death experiences" Vonnegut had where he interviewed dead people just inside the Pearly Gates.
Now I'm reading my third book by Douglas Coupland: Shampoo Planet. Coupland is amazing. He's terribly insightful and convicting about North American culture. Don't read Coupland if you don't want to hate aspects of America and the consumer culture that thrives here. But then again, those are precisely the reasons people should read Coupland. He's one of the few critics who can convict you with the right grace and style to make society acknowledge its opens wounds and desire healing and change. I will likely buy a couple more of his books before my work at Borders ends.
