kunstler on colbert

a while back i wrote about the james howard kunstler's book the geography of nowhere. it appears he has a new book out, and he promoted it on the colbert report. gist is that we can't sustain our way of life forever. that's probably true. but that doesn't mean we shouldn't fervently pursue solutions. he seems more than a little pessimistic in this clip.

Very interesting interview, I actually agreed with most of what Kunstler had to say. He's absolutely correct in saying that oil is not the problem. It's our lifestyle. If I didn't see 50 gas-guzzling Hummer's and SUV's on my 3-mile trip to work every morning, maybe people wouldn't be freaking out about the "oil crisis." I believe there are plenty of fossil fuels available to sustain life, but not our current Western lifestyle. Kunstler's right: good or bad, like it or not, things are going to change. We've built a system than cannot sustain itself, and we're living like our natural resources are infinite.

By the way, I meant no offense to any SUV/Hummer owners. I would be freaking out at the gas prices if I was driving a vehicle that only gets 7 miles to the gallon.

And I don't think Kunstler actually said that oil isn't the problem, that's just the impression I get from him.
